Prosthetist & Orthotist

 


Helping people get back on their feet is key to a prosthetist & orthotist. You assess and treat people who have reduced mobility due to illnesses, disabilities or amputations. Using artisan techniques and the latest in bionic technology, you create devices that transform the lives of your patients.

You are trained to prescribe, design, fit and monitor orthoses (mechanical braces) and prostheses (artificial limbs). You will assess your patient, design and fit a suitable mechanical device (orthosis), as well as teach him how to use and maintain the device properly.

Your patients may be:

  • Children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida who may require an ankle-foot orthosis to help them walk

  • Patients who have fractured their spines and need a body brace to support their backs while healing

  • Patients with osteoarthritis who may require a knee brace to relieve their pain

  • Patients who have had limbs amputated

Areas of practice:

  • Amputee rehabilitation

  • Neuro rehabilitation

  • Paediatric rehabilitation

  • Orthopaedics/sports

  • Rheumatoid or osteoarthritis

  • Geriatrics

  • Diabetes

  • Research and technology

Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in prosthetics and orthotics

  • Four years
