Podiatrist

Anyone who has difficulty walking will appreciate a podiatrist’s sole support. You diagnose the various types of lower-limb conditions, prescribe and administer the appropriate treatment so that patients take great strides in the recovery process. Working as part of multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary teams, you will diagnose, monitor and treat patients with bone and joint disorders such as arthritis, neurological and circulatory diseases of the feet such as diabetic foot conditions.

By analysing the way a person moves, you can help him / her address the functional relationship between different segments of the lower limb. You need to prescribe custom-made insoles (orthoses), as well as provide footwear advice to achieve this.

Areas of practice:
  • Lower limb musculoskeletal assessment & gait analysis

  • Prescription of custom orthoses

  • Sports medicine

  • Podopaediatrics (children's feet)

  • Ingrown nails and nail avulsion surgery

  • Advanced wound management e.g. diabetic foot ulcers

  • Research and innovation

Qualification:
  • Bachelor’s degree in podiatry

Institutes for training:
  • Recognised overseas institutions

Study duration:
  • Three to four years
