#CouragetoCareSG: Serving seniors from the heart

From hospital to community

Since young, NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies third year student Eddie Hee had a thing for science. When he chose to pursue a diploma in biomedical science, it came as no surprise to most. However, his choice of pursuing a nursing degree had its own challenges.

Bettering lives in the community

It was not an easy decision to leave a cushy job in the banking industry. Taking the plunge in 2006, Staff Nurse Django Satria joined Ren Ci Community Hospital and was awarded the Community Care Manpower Development Award to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Gerontology) in Nanyang Polytechnic!

"At NKF, we meet a lot of patients who are suffering from chronic, long-term diseases. As a clinical dietitian in the community, I get to work alongside my patients, empower them to live their lives as normally as possible and most importantly, help them to manage their diet and medical symptoms.

We also work as a team alongside various healthcare professionals in a multi-disciplinary setting, to ensure good quality of life for all our patients.

A nutrition professor once shared her experiences as a clinical dietitian, which made me realise how much of an impact a dietitian can have, just through food. This cemented my passion to pursue this career."

"I love that I can provide personalised home care, targeted at what the patient needs in the comfort of their home.

It is always interesting to understand and uncover personal stories each time I visit a new home. While some patients have family members who can support them, some unfortunately, do not. It made me realise that there are many people in need of assistance, and this motivated me to do more for them, as well as aim to be better at my job.

At the same time, I am also reminded to be grateful for my family and loved ones. At Home Nursing Foundation, I am also in charge of planning my own schedule and I can decide how to arrange my visits to patients. This gives me flexibility in managing my time and work!"

To ensure they had sufficient guidance and support during their stint with us, the hospital arranged nurse buddies to guide them through their daily assignments.”
